How Often Should You Edit Your Closet? My Seasonal + Intuitive Approach
One of the most common questions I get from clients is:
“How often do you edit your closet?”
My answer? I do big edits and small edits. Both matter. Here’s how I approach them, and why I believe closet editing is a key part of keeping your style aligned with your life.
The Big Closet Edits: 3x a Year
About three times a year — typically as the seasons shift — I do a seasonal wardrobe refresh. This usually takes a couple of hours on a weekend. It’s a bigger process, but because I use the same method each time, it flows pretty easily.
These big closet edits give my wardrobe a fresh feel — the same way rearranging a room in your house gives you a new energy. I pull out garment bags with pieces from the previous season and ask myself:
Do I want to add these back in?
Should I consign them?
Are they still working for me?
Often, it’s a mix of all three.
This is also when I make sure I’m touching everything I own — which is key. I want to be reminded of what I actually have and make sure I’m cycling through it. I weed out more than I bring in during this process, and it helps me feel like I’m in control of my closet — not the other way around.
Because when you don’t edit your wardrobe regularly, it’s easy to end up with a closet full of clothes you don’t wear — and a sense of overwhelm every time you get dressed.
If this feels hard to do alone, hire someone to help you. (Hi, that’s me!)
The Small Edits: All the Time
The smaller edits happen constantly. These are the everyday moments when I realize something just isn’t working anymore — not because it’s out of style, but because it no longer feels like me.
For example: I wore a black-and-white striped button-up with black shorts recently. By the end of the day, I was uncomfortable, fiddling with the waistband, and not loving how the shirt looked. So I said goodbye to both pieces.
Why? Because I know I deserve to feel good in my clothes. Life’s too short to wear anything that makes me uncomfortable — physically or emotionally. These intuitive decisions are part of holding my closet accountable.
Your Style Is Meant to Evolve
So why do I do these big and small edits?
Because my style is always evolving — and yours is too. I’m not the same person I was one, two, or five years ago. I live, grow, change, and experience life differently now. So I want to hold on to pieces that support that growth… and let go of the ones that don’t.
This process never really ends. And I’m okay with that.
The more I embrace that my wardrobe is meant to evolve, the more peace and confidence I feel when I open my closet. It’s about tuning into your intuition, how you want to feel, and being willing to experiment, let go, and try again.
Is it easy? Nope. It takes time, focus, and patience — just like anything worth doing. No matter how fast Amazon or influencers promise change, personal style comes from within.
Let Your Closet Reflect Who You Are Today
Closet editing isn’t just about organization. It’s about self-awareness. About building a wardrobe that reflects who you are right now — not who you were last year, or five years ago. At the end of the day, your closet should feel supportive — not stressful. It’s a tool to help you feel confident, expressive, and at ease in your everyday life. Closet editing is one of the simplest ways to get back in touch with what feels like you right now.
And that takes time.
And grace.
And maybe a few deep breaths and good coffee. Are you with me?
